What is Hadith?

Post by Isa333 on Tue Oct 30, 2007 5:23 am

Hadith (الحديث transliteration: al-hadīth) are oral traditions relating to the words and deeds of Muhammad (pbuh).

Hadith collections are regarded as important tools for determining the Sunnah, or Muslim way of life, by all traditional schools of jurisprudence. The Arabic plural is ahādīth (أحاديث). In English academic usage, hadith is often both singular and plural.

Ahadith were originally an oral tradition relevant to the actions and customs of Muhammad. Starting with the first Fitna of the 7th century those receiving ahadith started to question their sources.[1] This resulted in a list of transmitters, for example "A told me that B told him that Muhammad said." This list of the chain of testimony by which a hadith was transmitted is called an Isnad. The text itself came to be known as Matn.

The hadith were eventually recorded in written form, had their Isnad evaluated and were gathered into large collections mostly during the reign of Umar II (bin Abdul Aziz, grandson of Umar bin Khattab(RAA)2nd Caliph) during 8th century, something that solidified in the 9th century. These works are still today referred to in matters of Islamic law and History

Assalaam O Alikum,
As our brothers stated the Hadiths are infact the recordings of what is remembered about our beloved Prophet (SAW), it is important to note that not all Hadiths are accurate, these are the words of men as they can recall what they have heard about the prophet and therefore is not infalable, and there can be errors in them.

A rule of thumb, if the hadith goes against what is taught in the quran it is a false hadith. As a student of religion it is important that you verify the authenticity of a hadith. i hope this helps.

Ali

Yeah, i totally agree, you never know if a hadith is true or false (mostly true) . Words have been passed since a very loong time, and you will even realise if you play chinese whispers (a game were you whistper in a circle to partner near you), the words or sentence can changes slightly.

So just be aware that the Qur'an is 100%, but hadith is not, please dont get me wrong (LOL), most hadith information is true.
